September is the most Mexican month of the year because on the September 16 each year, we commemorate Mexican Independence Day. And no, for those of you wondering, “Cinco de Mayo” is actually NOT our Independence Day – that’s something different altogether.
Mexican Independence Day is a day to celebrate big. All people and all walks of life across Mexico will wear green, white and red to join in on the festivities of Independence Day, and Puerto Vallarta is not the exception! In Puerto Vallarta, we are proud to be the preferred vacation destination for the LGBT community who come every year to enjoy the Mexican Independence Day celebrations.
Mexican Independence Day History & Traditions
At eleven o'clock PM on September 16 each year, Mexicans around the world give the famous Battle Cry of our Independence! At that same hour, 11pm, the president of Mexico goes to the balcony of the Presidency of the Republic to recreate the famous speech with which the priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla gave to the Mexican people many years ago to encourage them to take up arms against Spanish rule! After the speech, the people rise up in with a hullabaloo to the famous: ¡Viva México! We wave Mexican flags and sing the Mexican National Anthem together with one voice. After that, the Independence Day Party in Mexico gets bigger and bigger, and you have to join in as part of this to really feel the celebration!
